5 Essential Gap Year Travel Gadgets!
It's about that time of year again when you're slaving away in a poorly paid job dreaming of your impending travels. Whether it's pulling pints, waitering or you're preparing for the Christmas rush in retail; your minds are increasingly thinking about those exotic places and all those activities you've only ever dreamed of doing.
Now while we haven't yet invented time travel you are already on the home straight, the greatest trip of your life beckons and to make your trip even better I've picked out 5 essential gadgets you cannot afford to miss!
1. Wind-up torch- (from Amazon UK)
Batteries are a thing of the past, expensive and annoyingly heavy. Why not purchase a torch that will never run out of battery. If it starts to flicker just wind it for a minute and you'll get a whole charge! I was once on a secluded island in Indonesia and the only generator for what must have been hundreds of miles suddenly broke down. Torch by torch ran out amongst my fellow travellers but mine never let me down. Personally I think this is an essential item and at £2.50 a bargain.
2. Flint & Striker with Compass-(from Amazon UK)
Weighing an incredible 68grams and providing 2 of the most essential survival items in an emergency, this gadget is a must have. It's so small and portable you could put it in smallest pocket of your backpack or clothes and forget about it. If you end up in a worst case scenario this will definitely save your life. For £2 can you really do without?
3. Travel Electronic Ultrasonic Mosquito Repeller, Personal Alarm & Torch-(from Amazon UK)
If you are going anywhere hot prepare for a nightly assault by armies of mosquitoes. You'll be Leonidas, without his 300, against a seemingly endless army of the pests. This device can at least help by providing a nuclear option which is also solar charging. The torch and alarm require batteries but if you purchase the torch above then they can provide fantastic backup. The hook feature is especially useful while the alarm generates an ear splitting 110 decibels. At £6.25 again a complete bargain.
4. Pama Solar Charger for mobiles, MP3's and cameras.- (from Amazon UK)
It's happened to all of us! You've been on a plane and your IPod runs out of battery. You need to make a phone call and the screen goes black. Your about to capture that special image, you will remember forever, and your camera runs out of battery! All infuriating experiences and all very likely to happen at some point during your travels. The jungle doesn't have electricity remember, nor will a number of the accommodation options if you're straying off the beaten path. For less than £15 you get a fantastic insurance policy that requires nothing but power of the sun.
5. Hama Flexible Camera Tripod-(from Amazon UK)
Flexible, lightweight, tiny and versatile. This tripod really is remarkable and can be used on pretty much every camera. Once screwed into the bottom, manipulate the legs around a tree, bench, fence or whatever terrain or surface you want. This wonderful gadget can help you get that extra special image or footage that you wouldn't otherwise be able to for fear of breaking your camera; not exactly high on the travelling wish list! At a ludicrously cheap £2 surely you have to buy one of these.
So there you have it for less than £28 and less than a full day's work you could get all these gadgets and be prepared for almost anything your gap year will throw at you!
