Mundo famosos Spots de Luna de miel
Choosing the perfect honeymoon destination is one of the most thrilling parts in planning the wedding. You see, after the tiring but very special and memorable wedding day ceremony comes the most awaited day of relaxation with your partner, and that is the honeymoon.
Where is your favorite honeymoon destination? According to various travel agents and also my research, these 10 places are the top honeymoon spots in the world. I have ranked them in order of popularity.
10. Bali Indonesia
Most of the foreigners whom you can see in Bali are couples celebrating their honeymoon. Since 1970s, Bali has always been in the top list for honeymoon destinations.
In Bali, you and your partner can visit the famous white sands of the Kuta beach and party while enjoying the buzzing night-life. What attracts the tourists is the combination of the Balinese' rich culture, fine beaches, breath-taking landscapes and friendly locals. Plus, staying in Bali is quite cheap and affordable, perfect for those budget travelers.
9. Jamaica
This country is the third largest island in the Caribbean. Honeymooners that desire an all-inclusive vacation package - from food, drinks, accommodation, activities and entertainment - this place is definitely an option. Jamaica is truly one of the most romantic destinations for honeymooners. Here you can spend your nights frolicking in secluded ponds, or watch the beautiful sunset while walking on the beach.
Jamaica boasts of its white sand beaches and clear blue waters, the Luminous Lagoon in Falmouth, the Alligator pond in South Coast. Hike down the Dunn's river falls and visit the Bob Marley museum or swim with the dolphins in the Dolphin Cove.
8. Tahiti
Who says you can't enjoy a nice vacation in the south pacific? In Tahiti, they offer all-inclusive packages perfect for newlyweds who are looking for a more private and relaxed setting for affordable prices.
Tahiti is located in the archipelago of Society Islands in the Southern Pacific Ocean. This island resulted from a volcanic activity and is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia. Tahiti boasts their captivating lagoons in Bora-Bora, over water bungalows resting in crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand beaches and pristine landscapes. And just like in Hawaii, the weather in this island is perfect all year-long.
7. Fiji
A real exotic getaway, if you're looking for seclusion and romance, Fiji is number one on the list. This island was ranked number two as the most secluded honeymoon destinations in the world. This island is isolated in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Australia, having 300 pristine islands, which today remain as the last perfect paradise for honeymooners and couples alike.
Fiji boasts of its crystal-clear waters and sun-kissed beaches; limestone caves which are available for tourists to explore, blue lagoons and the coral grotto, where you can go and kayak through while being surrounded by many species of colourful birds. You can also visit the villages and purchase handmade products sold by the locals.
Fiji is highly accessible with many international flights bringing tourists daily and is affordable than you think. Among the 300 islands in Fiji, I am sure that you will find the best deals for every budget traveler.
6. Paris, France
For a long period of time, the city of Paris has been identified with the word "romance". Paris, the city of lights is not only known because it is the home of the Eiffel Tower, but because of its unique history, contemporary and classic architecture, beautiful scenic spots, famous art museums and galleries and delicious French cuisines.
Paris is such a wonderful place for couples to discover on foot. Every place in the city is accessible either by foot or by car. Just watching the whole city on top of the Eiffel Tower together with your partner and having dinner in one of the finest restaurants is really one romantic experience. Needless to say, for couples that are looking for an elegant and informative, yet romantic honeymoon destination, then Paris is the one for you.
5. Italy
Two cities in Italy have entered the 5th spot of our list. First is the city of Rome. Full of history, Rome has attracted tourists all over the world, including honeymooners, due to its interesting structural architecture, medieval churches, beautiful scenic spots, museums and Renaissance palaces. Furthermore, located in Rome are St. Peter's Basilica and the famous city-state of Vatican.
What you can do in Rome is to go sight-seeing. Rome hosts a thousand of scenic spots and historical places like the "Collosseum" (Coliseum) or the Amphitheatre which stands for almost a hundred years; the "Domus Aurea, the ruins of the legendary Golden House of Emperor Nero and the "Pantheon", the best place where you can drink in elegance while in Rome. Elegant and classy - the perfect description for a honeymoon vacation spent in Rome.
Next is the floating city of Venice one of Italy's most romantic and beautiful cities. This city is unique because it is built on water in the middle of a lagoon. The only means of public transportation is via gondola, a romantic boat ride along the myriad of canals within the city. This ride is usually the highlight of every honeymoon spent in Venice.
4. Mexico
This country attracts a lot of tourists, including newlyweds, because of the beautiful climate, unspoiled beaches, Mayan archaeology and luxurious accommodations. Tourist destinations include Tulum, Cancun, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco. In Mexico, they offer all-inclusive packages to tourists especially couples and honeymooners looking for relaxation and romance.
For example, in Tulum, Mexico, you can enjoy luxury and privacy at reasonable prices. Tulum is a site of a walled Mayan city, and it rests on the Yucatan Peninsula, well-known for the world-famous ruins. What you can do here aside on swimming in the beautiful beaches are zip-lining, cavern snorkeling and canopy adventures.
Although not as cheap as a honeymoon vacation in Bali, staying in Mexico will give you the luxury of all-inclusive deals in a reasonable yet still affordable price.
3. Bahamas
Aside from being a stopover point for most Caribbean cruise, there's more to Bahamas than you think. Aside from the Nassau and Paradise Island and the amusement park hotel Atlantis, Bahamas also takes pride in places such as the Andros, Exuma, Green Turtle Cay and others among its 700 isles.
This place is highly accessible for honeymooners especially for those living in the U.S. Cruises and flights are really frequent in Bahamas. Newlyweds and couples will have plenty of options to choose from the vast array of water sports, golf courses and gaming casinos. Furthermore, they have a wide selection of accommodations, fine dining and delicious cuisines or simply dance to the rhythm of Calypso music and party all night. Every couple will definitely enjoy their honeymoon in Bahamas.
2. Hawaii
Many couples and newlyweds dream of spending their vacation or honeymoon the beautiful islands of Hawaii though most of them end up going to another place because they thought the price was too much. However, due to the worldwide recession, Hawaii has become more affordable than ever. Hawaii has always been on top of the list when it comes to "honeymooning" spots.
Among its six islands, Maui is the most popular destination for newlyweds. In Big Island, couples can experience the thrill in various volcanic adventures. In Oahu, you and your partner can go sight-seeing in Hawaii's most historical places like the Pearl Harbor and the Iolani Palace and much more.
Staying in Hawaii wouldn't be that expensive as you think. There are many Hawaii hotels that offer great deals even an all-inclusive package, especially for couples. A couple of things which you can do in Hawaii are diving, snorkeling, kayaking and "SNUBA". You and your partner can also try hiking, mountain biking or just enjoy nature tripping with your honey.
1. Caribbean
Topping our list is St Lucia, Caribbean. Although the Caribbean is filled with alluring honeymoon spots, we will focus on the island of St. Lucia, an island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea, part of the Lesser Antilles. This small island is very ideal for newlyweds and couples due to its private yet fun atmosphere. The island has a mountainous and volcanic terrain, with broad and fertile valleys and a vast array of tropical flora and fauna making this place the perfect Eden for honeymooners.
Adventurous couples can climb the peak of the volcanic mountain Gros Piton, one of the island's two great majestic peaks and is a World Heritage Site. You can also take a tour via Rain Forest Aerial Trams in Babonneau, St. Lucia's most relaxing and serene adventures. You and your partner will tour along the lush tropical rainforest of the Castries Waterworks Reserve, focus on your left and right, and you might find yourself a parrot.
St. Lucia has countless white sand beaches in the north and black volcanic sand beaches in the south. You can also visit Petit Piton, the other "signature" peak. Honeymooners will find their stay in St. Lucia more relaxing and tranquil compared to the other islands in the Caribbean, though there are still places where you can enjoy shopping, bar hopping and nightlife.
This concludes my list of top 10 honeymoon spots in the world. To start planning, I suggest you check out some vacation packages by asking a travel agent or by checking online because each of these places listed here offers various tour packages from an all-inclusive to an air fare plus accommodation or accommodation plus tour only. Availing one of these can surely save you lots of money for your trip.

Adventure of Surfing: The Top Three Best Surf Spots in The World
Surfing is a very challenging and exciting water sport that a lot of people enjoy. Many people enjoy riding big waves, watching the sunset, and feeling the adrenalin rush when a big wave comes. Surfers from all over the world travel thousand miles to the best surf spots in the world. The adventure of surfing does not only give them the enjoyment of sport itself, but also new cultural experiences. They easily make friends with other surfers from other countries, blend with the local culture, learn a little bit of the local language from the locals, and sample the local cuisine. Through the adventure, surfers can expand their network and share their exciting experiences with others. Some of the best surf spots in the world become their main travel destinations, although sometimes they find hidden treasures around the main spots that are also great.
The first surf destination that is also known as a surfers' paradise is Gold Coast, Australia. Located in the southeast corner of Queensland, Gold Coast offers the sunny subtropical climate and several perfect beaches for surfing. The waves are one the most consistent in the world and therefore it is very easy to get a good wave. The number two surf destination is Mentawai Islands, Indonesia. Located in the western coast of the island of Sumatra, the archipelago consists of four main islands that block waves from reaching the mainland Sumatra. Hence, you will always find big waves around the islands. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, is number three on this list. Located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, the bay consists of several beaches with good waves, but the waves are especially great during winter time. Super Tubes, which is one of the popular beaches in Jeffreys Bay, plays host to the annual Billabong Pro World Championship Tournament. Your adventure of surfing in those three paradises is guaranteed to be amazing.
Besides the three surf destinations above, there are several other locations which are equally interesting, such as Fuerteventura (Spain), El Salvador, Costa Rica, California (United States), Bali (Indonesia), Santa Catarina (Brazil) and Samoa. These places offer great waves and beaches that are worth visiting. Your adventure of surfing is a never ending adventure as there are just so many great places for surfing around the globe. Just make sure you go those places in the right time as the waves are also better during certain times of the year.
Pack your travel bag and surfboard and quickly head to the best surfing destinations in the world. Your adventure of surfing will never be the same if you have not been to any of those paradises.
Most Remote Destinations in the World
Cape Town, Cairo and Casablanca. Rome, the Riviera and Rio De Janeiro. San Francisco, Saigon and Sydney. All beautiful locations, but to the adventure-seeking traveler, these famous places are merely the aperitifs to the unique, exotic, un-tasted banquet of marvels offered up by our seven great continents. To feast on these locales, however, one has to step off the beaten path and take the routes less traveled.
Try Siberia, for example. Lake Baikal is a 600 kilometer (370 miles) body of water that hosts 2,000 species of plants and animals and twenty-seven islands. After taking a dip in the icy waters of the lake (which are known for curing all sorts of ailments), you can take a bus, train or boat tour around the islands and camp in remote locations, visit with the locals, sample the local seafood and then return to the lake, which is considered one of the world's best diving locations.
Then you can continue your island hopping by heading east, into Asia. The Gili Trawangan island of Indonesia is a 4.8 km (3 mile) island that boasts some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world and offers a breathtaking view of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in nearby Lombok. Gili Trawangan is essentially a village island and a haven for backpackers who will find almost all of the island's tourist facilities located on a half-mile stretch along the beach.
The next stop on your remote island vacation might be the province of Surigao, located on second largest island of the Philippines. On this route, you'll have left behind the tropical weather of Indonesia and dropped yourself into a land where it rains 223 days throughout the year. The oft-gloomy weather is befitting for the native population here, which clings tenaciously to its supernatural beliefs. You can visit a voodoo practitioner in the suburban village of Mabua, or join the locals in digging up their backyards in search of the gold that Japanese soldiers supposedly left behind during an invasion during World War II. Despite the remoteness of the area, Surigao also boasts stunning beaches, unique rock formations and delicious local delicacies made from rice, coconut and fresh seafood.
Then onwards, brave traveler, into the Caribbean, to the island of Curacao, 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Venezuela. Here, you can rest. The locals won't trouble you for they, too, will be resting, relaxing, smiling, singing karaoke and cooking up delicious delicacies that reflect the diversity of the island's inhabitants. The road-side kiosks, despite their shabby appearance, offer delicious food that fuses culinary influences from Haiti, China, the Netherlands Venezuela and Cuba. You can golf, gamble at a casino, visit an ostrich farm, or see death-defying motorcycle tricks on Sunday afternoons at an illegal race track. In Punda, Willemstad, you will find some of the best duty-free shopping in the Caribbean.

Travel the World - for Free!
I have been very fortunate to travel to several countries of the world while on business - countries I may have never visited on a holiday. There are pros and cons to working/doing business in a foreign country vs. visiting as a tourist but I have found it to be very rewarding. I have made many friends, been invited into many colleagues' homes to meet their families, dined on local specialties, and seen all the local attractions (I've been to the Giza pyramids three times - see photo on the right) because business partners are always proud to show you their country. After all, don't we always take visitors to Alberta to the Rocky Mountains? Foreign business delegations traveling to Calgary always schedules time to go to Banff, often timing it to coincide with the weekend.
So even though I don't sell a product, I do consider myself an exporter. That is because I am exporting my experience and knowledge - basically I export a service. Many more Canadian service companies (and consultants), from environmental companies to engineering firms, could be exporting, but aren't.
Here are four ways to get started.
1. Consult.
Consulting overseas is essentially exporting a service. For many Canadians the obvious first step is to examine the opportunities offered by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) - the executing agency of Canada's $2.87 billion aid program.
CIDA funds various development programs, some of which are administered and implemented directly by the recipient government and others by Canadian partners. In either case, experts are required for some aspect of the project. In my case, over the past year I have spent a total three months working in Indonesia providing export-related technical assistance to garment manufacturers in Bali.
To work with CIDA, all consultants must be registered with Consulting and Audit Canada. However, CIDA does not directly contact everyone and therefore it is useful to know the partners that cooperate with CIDA, and luckily a list of non-governmental organizations (NGO) is available on the CIDA web site (type 'voluntary sector division' in the search box, choose the first result and then click on 'Links to CIDA's partners').
CIDA also publishes a list of all its current bilateral projects which includes the name of the primary partner organization, the value of the project and time remaining. You may be able to offer your services to these organizations. From CIDA's home page, click on 'Projects' and then 'CIDA's contracts and agreements.'
Once you have gained experience working with CIDA, many international financial institutions such as the World Bank also hire consulting firms to plan, manage and evaluate their projects. For example, right now there is an Expression of Interest for a "Country Environmental Analysis" for Vietnam. It also helps to cultivate contacts within the World Bank as contracts under $100,000 are not publicly posted.
Even if you are not in the "development" business, think about what expertise you can offer to other countries.
2. Partner Overseas.
Very few companies are successful overseas if they do not have a local partner, regardless of whether they are selling a product or a service. The format of a partnership in services exporting (i.e. joint-venture, strategic alliance, equity agreement) is not necessarily the prime consideration but the Canadian company must take the time to determine what they need and want from their foreign partner. Someone to identify and pursue leads? Labour to undertake certain aspects of the project? Administrative assistance? Insight into local laws and customs? Language support? Competitive intelligence? The Canadian partner also needs to consider what they bring to the partnership. New technology? Expertise? Financing?
CIDA has funding available for Canadian firms developing partnerships in developing countries under its Industrial Cooperation Program.
Do you have a unique technology in demand overseas but are reluctant to start exporting? Don't assume all of the responsibility yourself - find a local partner and reap the benefits.
3. Network Locally.
This method for entering new markets is probably one of the most overlooked, despite its low risk. Every Canadian company working overseas is outsourcing some aspect of the project, usually to someone they know and trust - often one of their domestic suppliers. For example, most Canadian oil and gas companies have operations overseas as well - often in remote areas that require housing and catering. Rather than relying on local capabilities, they generally contract their camp services to well known Canadian firms, thus ensuring the comfort of their workers - because a camp full of unhappy and miserable oil rig workers is not a good thing!
Take a look at your current clients and see if any of them are doing business overseas.
4. Teach.
Everyone is aware of the opportunities to teach English overseas, which is what my sister is doing right now in South Korea (see photo at left). She signed her contract through a Toronto-based agency which is essentially exporting her knowledge of English and Canada (she has actually sung O'Canada to a room full of junior high kids, with no accompaniment!). At the post-secondary level, countries that are rapidly expanding their education systems are demanding skilled teachers and partnerships with foreign institutions in all professions. China and the United Arab Emirates are two that come to mind. However, it is not only within the formal education system that teaching and training opportunities emerge. The same issue of Canadian Business that printed my exporting advice (June 6 - 19, 2005) features a scantily clad model on its cover (I guess sex sells even business magazines) with the line, "The Business of Becoming China's Top Model." After four years of working in China, where white skin is highly valued (and here in North America millions are spent on tanning lotions and tanning salons - go figure), Canadian model Tracey Grebinsky is working with a local talent agency to: 1) train Western models about the complexities of working in China, and; 2) educate Chinese firms about the business of modelling (i.e. contracts, choosing a "look", working with agencies, etc).
Re-evaluate whether you have an exportable service. I'm a big believer that almost anything can be exported.
So pack your bags and get ready for an international adventure.

Explore the World As Safely As Possible With a Visit to a Certified Travel Clinic
Most of us dream of traveling the world beginning when we are just children. There are so many wondrous places to see. Whether the Great Pyramid at Giza or the jungles of Borneo, there is somewhere on Earth that is a little slice of heaven for you. Before you book those plane tickets and head off on the adventure of a lifetime remember to visit a travel clinic so that you are afforded the best protection possible.
Great Pyramid of Giza.
Located in Egypt and perhaps one of those most recognizable landmarks in the entire world, the Great Pyramid at Giza was built in approximately 2,500 BC. It is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids located atop the Giza Plateau and is the only remaining of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon may have withered and died but not this stone megalith. It still takes the breath away. Since Egypt is located on the northern tip of Africa it is important to visit a travel clinic to receive a yellow fever vaccine before you visit. The Great Pyramid may be magical, but it's not powerful enough to protect you from catching this still-dangerous disease.
When gazing at this breath-taking structure do not forget that what you are looking at is only the interior structure. Its grandeur was once even more impressive if that is possible. The outer portions of the pyramid were once encased in a smooth limestone covering, painted bright white and reflecting the sun's rays in what must have been quite a sight. It also originally had a golden capstone that also reflected the sun's rays. Close your eyes and picture that.
The Jungles of Borneo
Located north of Australia, Borneo is the third largest island in the world and includes the countries of Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. Its rain forest is even older than the Amazon located in South America and is home to a wide array of unique species such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, the pygmy elephant and orangutans. Once protected with the appropriate inoculations from a certified travel clinic, just imagine exploring this spectacular landscape of wild life and exotic peoples.
Out of the over 800 mammals, birds and amphibian species present in Borneo over 90 of them are endemic to the island. This means that these particular creatures cannot be found anywhere else in the entire world! Believe it or not, this island paradise can actually boast the fact that for the past 15 years 600 entirely new species have been discovered. From 1995 to 2010 an average of three brand-new species of wildlife have been discovered on Borneo. It is hard to describe the importance of this land mass to science. Where else in the world can one expect to be privy to such amazing new discoveries?
These are just two regions one may visit when you dedicate yourself to world travel. The globe is overflowing with spectacles and wonders each one different and unforgettable. Before setting off on your first-or latest-adventure, visit a travel clinic near you for the best protection against a host of dangers that may exist at your planned destination.
If you live in the New York area, log onto Travel Clinic NYC website to find out more about this certified travel clinic located conveniently just two blocks from Grand Central Station. They are up-to-date and highly regarded in the industry and their professional staff will do all they can to make your trip as safe and as unforgettable as possible. Surf Travel - Explore the World, Learn to Surf
With the help of technology and transportation, numerous regions of the world are accessible through the luxury of travel. Whether by plane, automobile, or boat, more travelers are reaching vast distances. Through preparation, planning, and perhaps most importantly, a strong sense for adventure, there are few limitations as to where we can travel. From snow covered mountain peaks in the Himalayas to outer reefs in Indonesia, it's up to each traveler to choose their method to reach their final destination. When recalling a travel experience, rarely is the destination the highlight of the memory. It's the people you meet, food you eat, and things you learn along the way that make the trip one of a kind.
Navigating the world allows one to experience different customs, beliefs, and values. These experiences give way to insight and set the stage for future paths and decisions. Geography, art, religion, and history are worldly goods that a traveler experiences first hand while on their journey. With nearly 195 countries worldwide, each has different laws, beliefs, and methods of living life. Through immersion, observation, and understanding, a traveler has the opportunity to live, breathe, and taste the diversity of different cultures.
With the right attitude and mindset, one can learn more from traveling than they would from many other educational experiences. Speak the language, taste the food, use public transportation, and engage with the locals. By fully immersing oneself, you gain the most out of the experience. The result of traveling is further self-discovery, better understanding of our world, and a gained perspective of life and what's truly important.
Taking the step of breaking away from daily routine and venturing into the unfamiliar is the first part of the process. By seeing new places and trying new things, a spark ignites for adventure that teaches one to expand their horizons and think outside the box. Regardless of distance traveled, exposure to different cultures and landscapes create a further sense of understanding for the world we live in.
As a surf instructor with Surf Camp, I have been fortunate enough to travel through multiple countries while teaching surfing and sharing my love for the Ocean. The friends I meet and experiences I gain along the way enrich my life. They shape my outlook on life and further develop my passion for exploration. From lucid blue waters in the British Virgin Islands, to blazing sunsets over the Pacific in Costa Rica, each location is unique, containing its own beauty. When I travel, I feel most alive. My focus is on the present as I break the mold of uniform routine. Every moment brings new faces, landscapes, cuisine, and opportunities for learning. Each time I return home with new friends, memories, and a fresh perspective on life.
Choose a surf travel vacation and embark on a journey that will open your mind and body to new experiences, knowledge, skills, friends, cultures, and appreciations.

My Buddy Mario - A True World Traveller and Conoisseur of Intercultural Experiences
In the 16 years that I have known my friend Mario I have heard many different tales of his world travels and he is one of those people who have lived, worked and hitchhiked through different exotic countries. Mario is a Toronto high school teacher and teaches French and world issues. He spent time living and working in places like Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico and Quebec and came face-to-face with often vastly different cultures.
Mario is also an immigrant in two different countries, Australia where he moved as a small child in the 50s, and Canada, where he arrived as a teenager. Here is his story, the story of an immigrant, traveler and global adventurer.
1. Please tell us a bit about your background. Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in San Vita al Tagliamento in northeastern Italy in the province of Friuli. But my parents are of Calabrese origin from Southern Italy. After his military service in the north of Italy my father decided to stay there due to his fondness for Friuli culture. In 1953 my father moved our family to Australia where he worked with a French contracting firm and we settled in Brisbane, Queensland when I was 2.5 years old. It was there that I had my first memories of the immigrant reality which was a very simple house made of wood. The roof leaked into our house and we had plants growing through the floor in the kitchen. The conditions were very basic, but this would set the stage for 11 years of a very challenging cultural adjustment period, following which my father moved us to Canada in 1964.
At that time, Italians faced a lot of discrimination, even harassment or sometimes violence in different forms, physical and psychological. My family was actually the target of a number of different forms of attack because we were immigrants. It made for a rather paranoid existence, constantly having to looking over your shoulder.
Remember, this was the 50s and Australia was still governed within the framework of the "White Australia Policy", a form of institutionalized apartheid. I witnessed various acts of brutality towards Australian aborigines with whom I was often mistaken, given the darkness of my skin. The proximity to the sea, however, made me appreciate the beauty of Australia in its purest form. During this time I developed a strong sense of self-reliance and I learned the importance of defending myself.
In the mid 70s I returned to Australia and I noticed that the work of many of those earlier immigrants had born fruit in the form of comfortable lifestyles and accomplished middle-class experiences. Italians had finally become mainstream and accepted. This also corresponded with Australia's new multi-cultural policy. Australia started to open up to different nationalities, which made for a more tolerant society.
2. You are a gifted multi-lingual individual. How many languages do you speak and what are they?
English and Italian are my first two languages. I also speak French, Spanish and Portuguese at a pretty high level. In addition, I also get by in Indonesian and I speak basic German and some phrases in Russian. The sound of different foreign languages fascinates me and I also appreciate that speaking the language is the key to these foreign cultures. Apart from the initial period during high school when I was exposed to English, French and German for the first time, the rest of my languages were acquired through living in the culture.
3. What was it like when you first came to Canada?
I remember it being very very cold since we arrived in Canada on February 16, 1964. My first observation was a very abrupt introduction to the Canadian climate. For a good several years I found it very difficult to adapt to the climate. On the other hand, as far as culture went, I could finally tap into my Italian-ness. It was actually in Toronto that the whole notion of being an Italian took on a new meaning for me because I felt accepted. I felt embraced here and felt that I could express my Italian heritage which led to me perfecting my Italian, considering I had suppressed speaking Italian in Australia. Once we came to Toronto I felt a desire to further go into the language.
High school in Canada was an appreciation of many other languages. We were offered courses in French, German, Latin and Spanish at the high school level. The school I went to reflected the transitional nature of Toronto at that time, which had been very WASP (white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant) until the 1960s and from then on started to change into a more cosmopolitan environment. There were people of different backgrounds which made you comfortable expressing yourself. By the time I went to university I was fairly at ease with my own intercultural identity.
My appreciation for Portuguese started on a construction job in Tecumseh, Ontario, where 2 gangs of construction workers, one Italian, one Portuguese, were confined to a very small house, provided by the construction company and were forced to live and interact with one another. I started to appreciate the similarities and differences with Portuguese culture, which I found absolutely fascinating. This was my initiation into the Portuguese language.
4. What were your earliest travel experiences?
Apart from the immigrant boat travels, my first travel memories were when I hitchhiked to Niagara Falls and Barrie, a medium-size town 90 minutes north of Toronto, when I was 15 years old. This gave me a sense of independence and the ability to design my own path on any trip. I felt in control and decided where I wanted to go. We did not realize that we needed a passport to cross into the United States, so we learned the lesson that you need your documents in order when traveling to foreign countries.
The next big trip was at the age of 17, crossing Canada with a fellow student in a VW beetle. We went to Vancouver for one month, picking strawberries, working on farms to survive. The second leg of that trip was to Mexico via California. This was the period of Height-Ashbury, the Summer of 68, and we truly experienced Flower Power in San Francisco. This left a lasting impression on me because of the freedom and the camaraderie among the youth. Anybody would open their house to you and you felt a bond with many young people.
The paradox of this period was that it was during the Vietnam War. So just as you had young people bonding with each other, believing that peace was the answer to the world's dilemmas, people were getting killed on the other side of the globe. The administration in Washington believed that war was the answer and these young people had in effect opted out of the system.
Mexico in itself was an eye-opener. It was my initiation into Latino culture and decrepit third world conditions of the masses. This was my politicization when I realized the plight of the majority of humanity and it made me even more curious to go back and get in contact with these people.
When I came back from Mexico it was very difficult to adjust to mundane middle-class values, just fitting into my place into my system. So I dropped out of 2nd year university and continued traveling without a set itinerary.
I went to Europe first, starting with London, worked in a hospital, and then spent 2 months traveling Europe on a Eurail pass. After Spain I visited Morocco where I met a guy called Giovanni Pozzi who turned me onto images and illusions of Afghanistan, a place he had been to before. This created a great desire in me to also discover that part of the world.
After Morocco I intended to meet up with Giovanni and travel with him from Brindisi, Italy, overland to Afghanistan. In September of 1971 I visited him in Milan after having gone back to discover my Italian heritage, and I then linked up with him in Brindisi from where we took a ferry to Greece and began our overland journey in the direction of Afghanistan.
We made it to the Turkish-Iranian border after a harrowing incident on a Turkish train which derailed. Unfortunately I had not learned the lesson of my teen years and had not checked out visa requirements for Canadians. Iran required a visa for Canadians, so I had to return to an Iranian consulate on the Black Sea where I obtained my Iranian travel visa. Somehow Giovanni and I got separated and this was the beginning of true independent traveling. I learned never to depend on other people's information, always double-check everything yourself.
3. Please tell us of your experiences and impressions during your first trip to Asia.
After traveling through Iran for about a week, which was during the repressive reign of the Shah, I hitchhiked with 2 Pakistani truck drivers from Tehran to Mashad, the site of the Blue Mosque, one of the most beautiful mosques in the Islamic world. From there we went to Herat, Kandahar and Kabul in Afghanistan, where I was privy to some of the most fantastic images of Afghan culture. I saw horsemen in bright green silk pants, in attire suited more to the Middle Ages than the 1970s. Afghanis appeared to be a very proud people, dignified and ferociously independent.
After a short stay in Kabul I went through the Khyber Pass into Peshawar in Pakistan. This too was an amazing view into the gun culture of this region. Every man had a gun 4, 5 feet long and it was truly an overwhelming sight to see this much weaponry on display. Unfortunately this was to continue since a war would erupt between Pakistan and India at this time, and after leaving Pakistan I ended up traveling through India during a time of war.
I was traveling on trains with a mobilized army, a people in frenetic motion not knowing what to do. The whole country was in a state of tension. Foreigners were asked to leave the country, so after a month in New Delhi I had to change my plans of visiting Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) and take the next flight out of Calcutta in the direction of Bangkok. The flight ticket at that time cost US$80 one way in 1971. Calcutta was also the site of millions of refugees pouring in from what would eventually become Bangladesh. They literally overtook Calcutta. I was about to sleep outside when I was approached by a couple of Anglo-Bengalis who insisted that it was absolutely improper for a European to sleep on the ground that way. They then insisted that I go and stay with them for a couple of nights. Their only requested favour in return was to send them a Levi jacket when I'd get back to Australia.
4. From India you moved on to Thailand. Please tell us about your experience in South East Asia.
In Bangkok of 1971 I would stay at the Atlantic Hotel for $1 a night, Bangkok was still a relatively small capital at that time. I left Bangkok and headed south, hitchhiking where I was brutally initiated to Thai culture. I was at the back of a pickup truck and dangling my feet out of it, the pickup truck was passed by another vehicle whose occupants got out and threatened me, pointing to my feet. Luckily a young Canadian from Saskatoon, Murray Wright, was sitting in the front of my pickup and explained that it was a big mistake to show the soles of your feet. This is a major insult in Thai culture. I then realized that when traveling it is very important to understand non-verbal communication as well. This was a major lesson for me.
This meeting with Murray was fortuitous. He had had an accident building a Japanese sugar factory and asked me if I would take over his job as a carpenter. This led to one month working with Thais and understanding to some degree Thai culture. It was also my first experience of amoebic dysentery, a tropical disease, which nearly killed me. This is how I was initiated to eating conditions in the developing world.
